英五學舌島

　　本系列是我想藉由Wheelock's Latin這本課本配套的書籍《38則拉丁文故事》（38 Latin Stories: Designed to Accompany Wheelock's Latin）來溫習拉丁文這個十分繁複的語言。而在練習把這些拉丁文故事翻成英文的同時，我也想藉此順便磨練自己的英譯中能力，並分享這些小故事給可能有興趣的人，最後，如果有餘裕的話，我也會再加上一些註解來做補充，以及自己對這些故事的想法或思考。

　　這次第二篇故事講述的是，太陽神的兒子法厄同不自量力，妄想駕駛太陽馬車來證明自己，最終卻落得災難般下場的故事。

　　　Phaethon is a son of Phoebus.¹ A friend of Phaethon doubts about the rumor of his divine origin: "No one is the son of gods. You do not have gift of gods. Your story is not true." A great anger moves Phaeton: "I am son of a god! Phoebus, give sign!" Phaethon summons. Phoebus hears the boy and without delay flies from the heaven. "Oh my son, what do you desire?" Phoebus asks. "Money? Wisdom? Life without trouble?" Phaethon responds, "I desire to have reins and to drive the chariot of the sun." Oh stupid boy! Your plan is bad. You should not desire the duty of gods. Phoebus warns his son, but the boy does not see the great danger.  The horses are strong; Phaethon is not strong. A chariot without a proper master goes astray in the sky. What do we see? Phaethon falls from the sky. Oh bad luck!

　　法厄同是菲比斯¹的兒子。法厄同有朋友對傳聞裡說他有神的血脈提出質疑：「沒有任何人是神的血脈。你才沒有神的天賦，你的故事不是真的。」濃濃的怒意籠罩了法厄同：「我是神的兒子！菲比斯，現形吧！」法厄同召喚著。菲比斯聽見這孩子的呼喚，立刻從天上飛來。「我的兒子，你想要什麼？」菲比斯問。「要錢？智慧？無虞的人生？」法厄同回答：「我想要韁繩來駕駛太陽車。」喔傻孩子！你這打算很糟。你不該渴望執行神的職責。菲比斯警告他的兒子，但這孩子看不到其中凶險。馬匹十分強而有力，法厄同卻不。沒有適當領導的馬車會在空中失控。我們看到了什麼？法厄同從天上跌了下來，運氣真差啊。

這則以悲劇收尾的神話故事，其實都源自於家長的縱容以及一個年輕孩子亟欲自證的傲氣。根據傳說，法厄同一下因為駕駛得太高使大地寒冷，一下又駕駛得太低讓大地過於炎熱，因為他只想到他自己，缺少謹慎準備就貿然行事，讓他人因而受難，他自己也因而落得了跌下馬車致死的下場。這類故事其實屢見不鮮，因為「衡量自己的能力在哪」不是一件稀鬆平常、大家都常做的事。願有更多人能從法厄同的例子借鑑，給自己多點喘息空間，別拖垮自己，也拖垮別人。
